Microsoft announced its acquisition of HockeyApp, a mobile crash analytics and app distribution service, as it looks to bolster its tools and services to support mobile-centric development.

HockeyApp supports iOS, Android and Windows Phone projects, and will be integrated with Microsoft’s Visual Studio Online offering.

In the coming months, new Android and iOS SDKs will be introduced as part of Microsoft’s Application Insights tools – intended to give data on application usage, availability and performance.

The service will remain available to new and existing customers.

HockeyApp is based in Stuttgart, Germany. In a blog post, the company said that Microsoft has been a customer since 2011, and “we saw the potential of the added abilities and resources of Microsoft to make our platform even better”.
