Amazon boosted the tools available to iOS and Android developers by adding support within its Analytics service for app events that can be defined by developers.

The custom logging and reporting functionality means the service can process events with names and attributes appropriate to the app or game being analysed.

The addition of two lines of code enables the service to generate reports showing when the events occur over time or an average frequency during a specific period. Reports can be restricted to a certain platform and refined by custom attributes or values.

Previously developers would have to write client code to update a local database which would then need to be transferred to a server for analysis. They can now record a custom event with an ‘effect’ attribute to capture the details and present them on the Custom Events Dashboard.

The analytics service, which also supports the Fire OS used by Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets, was launched for iOS and Android in November, providing developers with the ability to analyse customer engagement through metrics such as daily active devices, total sessions, and average revenue per device.

The company’s efforts to boost its appeal to iOS and Android developers have seen it launch an app promotion programme and introduce the GameCircle social platform and Whispersync backup technology for iOS.
