Indian mobile operator Bharti, Estonia’s EMT, Globe Telecom of the Philippines and the Czech Republic’s Telefonica O2 all announced today that they will launch Apple’s iPhone 3G on August 22 as part of a second-wave of launches of the iconic device, which had its global launch last month. The addition of the four new markets will expand the iPhone’s footprint to 29 markets worldwide. Cellular News notes that the most significant new launch could be in India, the world’s second-largest mobile market, though the country is not scheduled to auction 3G licenses until later this year. None of the operators revealed pricing details. Apple claims it took just three days to sell a million iPhone 3G units following its July 11 launch.

In other iPhone news, Softbank – the exclusive operator distributor of the device in Japan – announced yesterday that it is slashing its iPhone 3G tariffs by more than half, less than a month after launching the device. From today, the monthly price will drop from JPY7,280 (US$68) to JPY2,990 (US$28) due to cuts in its data packages. The new pricing model makes Japan the world’s cheapest iPhone 3G market.
