Google unveiled an Android feature called Nearby, which can be used to deliver users “the right apps at the right time”.

It cited the example of barcode scanners for stores, or audio guides for museums. If Bluetooth and Location are activated on a device, users are sent a notification of relevant content.

The company said that earlier this year, it started experimenting with showcasing websites relevant to a place in its Chrome browser. In addition to displaying relevant apps, Nearby will also show these websites directly from Android.

To use the technology, developers need to associate with Bluetooth beacons located at specific sites. Beacons can be purchased from a number of certified manufacturers.

Nearby is rolling out to devices as part of a Google Play Services update. It will work with Android 4.4 (KitKat) and above.
