Telenor Group has named Lars Erik Tellmann as CEO of Telenor Myanmar, replacing Petter Furberg, who will take a new position in Telenor Digital Businesses in Asia.

“Lars Erik has been part of the founding management team in Myanmar, and has played a central role in the operations and development of the company over the past three years. I am confident that in him Telenor has an experienced leader to drive the next phase of our growth,” said Sigve Brekke, president and CEO of Telenor Group.

Tellmann has been CFO at Telenor Myanmar since July 2013. He was previously SVP and head of strategic development in Telenor Asia. Tellmann has also served as director and board member in a number of Telenor’s publicly listed mobile companies in the region. He joined Telenor in 2001 and has been with Telenor in Southeast Asia for more than eight years.

Furberg, who led Telenor Myanmar since it started operations in July 2013, will support business development within its online classifieds and marketplace and consumer services.

Telenor has expanded quickly in Myanmar since it launched service in Q3 2014 along with the country’s other foreign operator, Ooredoo. Telenor had 17 million mobile connections at the end of Q2, up by 3.3 million from the end of 2015, giving it a 37 per cent market share, according to GSMA Intelligence. State-owned MPT has seen its share fall from 100 per cent to 44 per cent over the last two years, while Ooredoo has a 17 per cent share.
