In an effort to position itself as the mobile music provider of choice, the Danish telecoms operator, TDC, claims to have launched the world’s first unlimited music download service at no extra cost to its customers. The company is offering the service to all its mobile, online and cable subscribers as part of their ordinary subscription.

According to a story carried by Sky News, the TDC Play service, which has been developed in conjunction with 24-7 entertainment, is accessed via a dedicated website and enables subscribers to download as many songs as they want, either individually or in playlists. However, the music tracks can only be stored on one device, such as a mobile phone, and they cannot be burned onto a CD for posterity. Users will be able to keep the track for as long as they retain their TDC subscription.

Frank Taubert, CEO of 24-7 entertainment, said that the service would help to stop the illegal downloading of music on peer-to-peer networks. “Users that can access the catalogue with no additional costs are not tempted onto peer-to-peer services.”
Later this year, Omniphone should launch its MusicStation Max handset, which will be capable of downloading unlimited free material.
