During an investors’ call for its Q4 results, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said 90 per cent of payments made by mobile devices in the US in 2013 took place in one of the coffee chain’s stores.
Even allowing for the popularity of Starbucks’ mobile app, which allows users to pay by having a barcode scanned on their mobile device, it’s a significant claim. Schultz did not cite an independent source.
The figure from the call was first picked up by Geek Wire.
Furthermore, Schultz said 16 per cent of all transactions in its stores occur via a mobile device, which is equivalent to about seven million mobile payments per week.
The company also announced it will launch a mobile ordering service in select US stores in December. The new service enables users to place an order via their mobile device, and then collect it from a Starbucks store. It is initially available at stores in Portland, Oregon. The aim is to roll out Mobile Order and Pay across the country in 2015.
“Imagine the ability to create a standing order of Starbucks delivered hot to your desk daily,” said Schultz. “That’s our version of e-commerce on steroids.”
