Leading Canadian mobile operator Rogers Communications has announced that its NFC-based mobile payment service, which it aims to launch commercially later this year, will use security technology supplied by Gemalto.

The vendor’s solution will secure the credentials and card data that is held on subscribers' SIM cards. Rogers is currently trialling payments services and aims for a commercial launch later in 2012. Future services could include coupon redemption, loyalty programmes, public transit and other forms of digital identification.

Rogers’ payments services will be compliant with the EMV standard for secure debit and credit card transactions. Likewise, Gemalto's solution will also be compliant with the same standard.

Rogers says tens of thousands of Canadian retailers are already equipped with contactless point-of-sale terminals which can support NFC-based payments, which has led to supporters saying the chances of a successful mobile payments service launching in the country are high.
