US Software maker Adobe has announced it is to combine its mobile and devices unit with its larger “Experience and Technology” division in a move commentators say is designed to kick-start Adobe’s mobile ambitions.

The reorganisation means the mobile division will now be headed by Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch and is part of the company’s plan to move towards an integrated technology platform for computers, handsets and consumer devices.

Gary Kovacs, vice president of product management and marketing for the mobile and devices unit, has been promoted to vice president and general manager of the business. He replaces Al Ramadan, who leaves the company on 30 April.

Silicon Alley Insider says the reorganisation is part of a plan to rapidly expand its presence in the mobile sector. It notes that while Adobe’s Flash animation and video software has been a huge success on the internet it has been less successful in mobile where it is competing fiercely with rival software such as Microsoft’s Silverlight.
