Media company Sky said there are “specific issues” with Android which prevent it from offering its content via apps developed for this platform, while noting that there are “a significant number of Android customers” it could address. According to The Guardian, the problem is related to “security around streams,” in that Android cannot offer the level of protection demanded by Sky’s content rightsholders. The company is hoping to have a workaround by September 2011, although this was deemed a “challenge: we’re optimising someone else’s [DRM] solution and putting a wrapper around it.”

The Guardian said that Sky has seen 10 million downloads of its iPhone app, but in order to “make a real commitment to mobile” it needs to extend this across platforms. The company noted that BlackBerry has been a “really encouraging platform for us,” and the company is also eyeing the tablet market: “we’re looking at all of them; you have to follow the customer.”
