Music discovery app company Shazam announced its first corporate acquisition, with the purchase of synchronized lyric technology from Silicon Valley-based company Tunezee. The company announced that it will immediately launch LyricPlay, a new feature in the Encore premium version for the Shazam app, which will enable users to view lyrics synchronised in real-time with the music they are listening to. Terms of the deal were not revealed.

According to the company, it has integrated the new technology with its core platform, improving its accuracy, and adding “a layer of animation and visualisation to create a fun and engaging way to see the lyrics in real-time with the song.” In parallel, the company has built a database of lyrics, with a “comprehensive and growing” library of more than 25,000 of the most popular identified songs.

LyricPlay will initially launch in the US and Canada, before being made available to subscribers in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
