Canadian firm Opentext, a provider of enterprise content management software, has acquired Wecomm, a UK apps platform vendor, with the aim of boosting the existing apps-based service it offers to its corporate customers. Opentext wants to accelerate its existing mobile strategy with the acquisition of Wecomm. “As mobile devices are changing the consumer landscape, more enterprise customers are moving to mobile apps to reach everyone from customers to employees,” said Eugene Roman, Opentext’s CTO. In 2010 the company launched its Opentext Everywhere software package and the addition of Wecomm will add to its capability in this area.

Wecomm, which was founded in 1999, describes itself a pioneer of the apps market. Its platform enables companies to deliver own-branded apps to a range of devices based on a range of operating systems. Clients include BSkyB, CNN, NBA and Turner Classic Movies. The firm has the capability to develop apps for smartphones, handsets and tablets based on iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Java.

Wecomm is “a logical fit for our major brand-name customers” in banking, retail, media and entertainment and other markets, says Opentext’s Roman. The latter portrays the acquisition as a natural evolution in keeping up with the demands of its clients’ marketing strategies. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. Opentext expects to close the deal “this quarter.”
