HP announced more details of its plan to open-source its webOS platform, which is starting with its Enyo developer tool.

According to the company, Enyo 2.0 enables developers to write a single app that works across multiple devices and desktop web browsers, “from the webOS, iOS and Android platforms to the Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers – and more.”

The source code for Enyo is available now.

The company said it will make the platform source code available “by September.” It hopes that doing this “unleashes the creativity of hardware and software developers to build a new generation of applications and devices.”

During the first half of the year, the company said it will make available individual elements of the webOS source code, “from core applications like Mail and Calendar to its Linux kernel,” until the full code base is available.

On the roadmap are Enyo updates in April and July.
