Visa, Chevron aim to pump up their payments strategy

Visa is to launch a trial of NFC-based mobile payments at more than 20 Chevron branded petrol stations in the US.

Users will be able to pay at the pump using their mobile phone, something that an estimated 80 per cent of Chevron customers in the US already do using a credit or debit card.

The trial launches later in the autumn at Chevron stations in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, enabling users to pay with a range of unspecifed mobile payment services. Potential participants include Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay, all of whom are vying in the US for retail partners.

Chevron and Visa are not the first to offer tap-and-pay at petrol stations. Back in 2012, Isis announced that two US manufacturers of retail fuel dispensers, Wayne and Gilbarco Veeder-Root, would integrate its payment service. Isis (later renamed Softcard) failed to make an impact in the market and was then absorbed by Google, so it’s unclear if the service is still available.
