Square will handle some payment services for highend US grocer Whole Foods Market – 18 months after it it teamed with Starbucks, its only other deal with a leading US chain.

Observers had been speculating on a lack of any further deals as Square sought to change its image from a firm that only handled payments for market stalls and food trucks.

This second agreement does not involve Square handling checkout payments for the retailer but instead it will process transactions at what are termed in-store venues, including sandwich counters, juice and coffee bars, pizzerias, and beer and wine bars.

The grocer will use Square’s Register and Stand, its software and hardware products, in those locations.

Already seven Whole Foods Market stores are using Square Stand, a physical stand developed by the company that turns the iPad into a card-swiping register.

In addition, at certain stores the retailer will offer shoppers the option to use their phone to pay using the Square Wallet app. And several Whole Foods Market locations will serve as “lab stores,” testing additional innovations for shoppers.
