The Amazon executive in charge of product management for new payments services – including a mobile wallet app – has left the online retailer for Microsoft, said Re/code.

Iain Kennedy (pictured) was head of product management for Amazon’s local commerce business and his team was developing a money transfer service, as well as the mobile wallet.

Interestingly, they were also working on “a set of related, undisclosed, products which will delight billions of customers as they buy and sell things in the real world (as opposed to online),” according to recent tweets by Charlie Kindel, Amazon’s director of consumer products for mobile wallet, P2P and local commerce.

Amazon recently launched its first excursion into physical payments with Local Register, a card reader and free mobile app that enables local businesses to accept credit and debit cards on a smartphone or tablet.

Other products and services look likely to follow.

Kennedy’s new job is senior director of product management, commerce platform strategy at Microsoft. After six years with Amazon, Kennedy was looking for a new challenge, he said.
