Welldoc has reached agreement with two insurance companies who will pay for diabetes patients to subscribe to the company’s Diabetes Manager app, according to The New York Times. The identity of the two companies was not disclosed by Welldoc’s president Anand Iyer but he said they have agreed to pay the monthly subscription cost of more than US$100 for patients from early next year.
The Diabetes Manager app has clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration to operate as a medical device. Its cost makes the app more akin to a drug prescription than an app. It has been shown to reduce the blood sugar levels of diabetes patients claims the company. As well as advice to patients, Diabetes Manager uses an algorithim to analyse the data they upload wirelessly and then send recommendations to their doctors.
