TeliaSonera has proposed a shake-up of its board of directors following a recent scandal, with its nomination committee stating that the company “needs a new start in many respects”.

Only two candidates for the eight-strong board are being proposed for re-election, with the other six seats being occupied by new appointees.

Following an investigation into the company’s investments in Uzbekistan, and the appointment of law firm Mannheimer Swartling to investigate irregularities, the nomination committee began working through various scenarios, including “substantial change in the composition of the board”.

TeliaSonera has already parted company with Lars Nyberg, president and CEO, following “serious criticism” surrounding its conduct when making its investment in Uzbekistan.

While Mannheimer Swartling said that it had found no evidence that TeliaSonera had participated in bribery or money laundering, it was noted that its internal controls were not sufficient to guarantee it did not become involved in any unethical practices.

In a statement, the company said that preparations for its 2013 Annual General Meeting “have been more extensive than normally”.

At an early stage, Anders Narvinger, TeliaSonera’s chairman, and Timo Peltola, vice-chairman, said that they would not be standing again.

It has been proposed that Marie Ehrling (pictured), the former president of TeliaSonera’s Swedish operations (to 2006) and member of several other boards, take on the chairman’s role.

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, former CEO of Nokia, has been proposed as vice-chairman.

Also among the candidates for the board are Spotify founder Martin Lorentzon and former airline boss Mats Jansson.
