US operator Sprint wants to reintroduce Nextel as a brand for enterprise customers, according to Techcrunch.

The operator closed its Nextel iDEN network in summer 2013 but is looking to resuscitate the Nextel name as part of a 4G-based push for the enterprise market, according to a source close to the company.

The operator is also planning a wider overhaul of its marketing in the first quarter of 2014 with the launch of a new prepaid brand called Sprint Freedom, said the source.

The latter will pull together the existing Boost and Virgin Mobile identities that target younger, budget-conscious consumers.

But it is unclear if the arrival of Sprint Freedom necessarily means the departure of the well-worn Boost and Virgin Mobile names.

Nextel’s appeal among business customers was actually one of the prime reasons behind Sprint’s purchase of its parent nearly a decade ago. The push-to-talk service was widely used by users such as dispatch firms.

Now it appears that Sprint will use the Nextel brand to target enterprises with a range of 4G-based services.

Sprint did not offer a comment.
