LG’s mobile unit slipped into the red in the third quarter of 2015, as sales fell due to weaker demand for high-end devices in its home market.

“LG expects the launch of the advanced V10 and price-competitive Nexus 5X smartphones in the fourth quarter to improve the overall product mix,” it said.

The unit saw an operating loss of KRW77.6 billion ($68 million), compared with a prior-year profit of KRW168.6 billion, on revenue of KRW3.38 billion, down 21 per cent year-on-year from KRW4.26 billion. In addition to its slowed sales, the company noted unfavourable foreign exchange movements in emerging markets.

The company shipped 14.9 million smartphones, which while up 6 per cent from the earlier sequential quarter, marked an 11 per cent drop year-on-year.

While LG’s mobile business has been profitable earlier in 2015, it was on a downward trajectory, to breakeven in Q2. It’s last loss-making quarter was at the start of 2014.

On a group level, the company reported a “modest” net profit of KRW124.8 billion, compared with a prior year profit of KRW202.7 billion, on revenue of KRW14.03 trillion, down from KRW14.71 trillion.

The company also noted increasing competitive pressure in the TV market.
