Hewlett-Packard has launched webOS version 1.0, opening up the underlying code for the former Palm smartphone platform to the open source community.

"We have completed our initial roadmap and are releasing Open webOS 1.0 on schedule, as promised,” said HP. “With this release we have affirmed our commitment to meet our goals and create a vibrant open source community.”

Open webOS 1.0 includes support for core applications such as email, browser and HP’s previously-announced Enyo cross platform developer tool.

Future versions plan to include support for Qt5/WebKit, media and audio, Bluetooth, network management and rendering.

HP said that over the past nine months it had delivered over 75 Open webOS components, writing over 450,000 lines of code.

The firm demonstrated the OS running in a HP TouchSmart PC (see below).
