The need for CSPs to cut operating and production costs for voice is becoming increasingly important, as native voice services remain a requirement in most of the world’s markets:

• Native voice and support for services such as emergency calling remain an operating license obligation
• High-quality native voice experience is expected by consumers whether on 2G or 5G.
• New use cases for native voice are still emerging, for example emergency calling for cars
• A variety of use cases cannot be replaced by OTT applications

This paper looks at how IMS and related cloud-native voice applications that have been designed and built from the ground-up help with cost reduction, increased flexibility and scalability. It also describes the agility benefits of moving to the cloud which enables CSPs to simplify both their day-to-day network operations and better manage the sunsetting of circuit-switched 2G and 3G voice services.
