Power requirements are changing at telecom network facilities, as operators collocate 5G infrastructure with edge computing resources to support customers’ increasing demands for data-intensive applications and ultra-fast processing speeds. The convergence of 5G and edge computing, especially at access and edge sites that have limited space, means that telco equipment, fed by DC power, is now installed close to IT equipment that runs on AC. Service providers need a new power architecture so they can process AC and DC loads in the same location to support their networks and customer services.
This paper discusses the power integration challenges that come with convergence and introduces the Vertiv™ NetSure™ Inverter Series, which can integrate AC and DC power at access and edge sites. Operators can use the approach to reduce the complexity of convergence, centralize visibility into both power sources, optimize energy use, and ensure high availability of their networks.
