Telecommunication providers are one of the largest consumers of energy in the world, contributing 2.6% of global carbon emissions in 2020 (ETNO). However, many countries have started to place restrictions on carbon emissions and energy use, forcing telecom providers to come up with new strategies to increase efficiency and move towards more sustainable practices. As providers update their networks for 5G and prepare for 6G and beyond, this provides an opportunity to design smarter, more efficient, and more upgradable telecommunication systems.

In this session, we will discuss climate regulations, designing for sustainability, and the technological advancements that companies will need in a journey towards carbon-neutrality.

You will Learn:

  • What are the largest contributors to energy consumption in the telecom industry
  • What design decisions telecom providers are faced with in the next phase of development
  • How proper positioning, design, and software practices can increase the efficiency and efficacy of telecommunications networks
