LightSquared has won a key waiver from US regulators allowing it to build a nationwide, terrestrial-only mobile phone service, reports the Financial Times. The ruling allows the proposed wholesale LTE operator to bypass a requirement that devices connected to its network be able to communicate with satellites. LightSquared said it was “pleased” with the Federal Communications Commission’s decision and described the waiver as “an essential building block for our network” that would enable it to meet the “rigorous construction timetable” imposed by the FCC when the network was approved last year.
