Website Brighthand has received a statement from DataViz, developer of the Documents To Go smartphone applications suite, stating that despite reports of an acquisition by Research In Motion, it remains in business and has several new products in the pipeline. In a somewhat terse statement, it said that “it is not our practice to disclose details of our business relationships with our partners. That being said, while we did sell some of our assets to RIM, DataViz itself has not been acquired and is still very much in business.” The company also iterated its support for platforms including Android and iOS, although it has separately decided to end development of WebOS products, citing certain “technical hurdles” and “another vendor announcing they will bring a competitive product to market.”

An earlier, widely-reported comment from RIM stated that the BlackBerry maker had acquired “the majority of [DataViz’s] employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform.” At the time, it was suggested that the deal was good for RIM as it would enable it to strengthen the app suite available to its core enterprise customer base – especially as RIM is expected to enter the competitive tablet computer market in the near future. Some of DataViz’s other products would also seem unlikely to appeal to RIM, including its products for synchronising devices with Microsoft Exchange servers and a password storage app, meaning a partial deal seems to make more sense – if DataViz can maintain what it has left, minus most of its staff, as a going concern.
