US fastfood chain Wendy’s is trialling mobile payments in three US markets with an unusual approach. Users must read a one-time code (pictured) they are sent to authenticate a transaction.

According to Mobile Commerce Daily, users with the Wendy’s app on their smartphone can create a profile linked to a credit card or gift card.

Users carry out a transaction by swiping their smartphone’s screen which reveals a one-off, one-time code on the screen that consumers read out to the cashier in a Wendy’s outlet. However, the code will expire unless used in five minutes.

The trial is taking place in three US cities: Austin, Texas; Portland, Oregon; and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Other mobile payment services typically use technology such as NFC, barcode scanning or cloud-based payments.
