Afghanistan mobile operator Roshan has launched a service that enables its mobile money subscribers to receive payments from abroad. The service is possible through a link-up with Western Union that was first announced at this year’s Mobile World Congress.

Subscribers to Roshan’s M-Paisa service can receive payments into their mobile wallets from family and friends working abroad. Remittances are most likely to flow from the UAE, Germany and Canada which are the countries with the largest populations of Afghans living abroad.

Western Union offers the same service via partnerships with mobile operators in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Canada, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Paraguary, the Philippines, Tanzania, Uganda and the US.
