Paypal has given a preview of the mobile payment technologies it will use to compete against rivals as it tries to woo physical retailers.  The company showed off its new technologies at an event in Los Angeles organised for merchants.  “We’re rolling out a one-stop shop for merchants to engage their customers directly during every part of the shopping lifecyle,” wrote Scott Thompson, Paypal president, in a blog accompanying the event. The company will be announcing “much more over the next few months”, he wrote.

In a video alongside the blog, Paypal suggests a range of ways it will support retailers in addition to handling payments. This includes P2P transfer of funds between mobile phones, a setup Paypal showed off earlier this summer. Or enabling a mobile user to swipe barcodes to make in-store purchases, so cutting queuing times for the retailer. Or using a mobile to scan QR codes on posters for special offers. In addition, at the end of the video a user manages a number of accounts (the company’s own, bank and credit card) through PayPal and chooses which of the three it will use to settle various bills.
