Research by MPayMe has found that fewer than ten per cent of smartphone users in the UK have made an in-store mobile payment, according to the findings.

And just 7.5 per cent of merchants surveyed on London’s Oxford Street, which is described as Europe’s busiest shopping street, are technically capable of accepting mobile payments.

MPayMe is itself a mobile payments provider.

“When there are already well established and traditional ways to pay, ie cash and cards, what’s the benefit of introducing a rival if it doesn’t come with added value?” said Hooman Mazaheri (pictured) European CEO of MPayMe.

MPayMe is a Hong-based firm that earlier this year launched a service called Znap in the UK and a number of other markets. Its platform integrates payments with other services such as loyalty, geo location in-app consumer communication and marketing.

The survey interviewed 1,500 UK adults earlier this month.
