LIVE FROM GSMA MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2014: Fitness features made a strong appearance on Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S5 – to the extent that South Korea’s health regulator has said it will need to review a built-in heart rate monitor on the device.

Samsung is making the device available globally through retail, e-commerce and operator channels in April. In the meantime, Mobile World Live had a demo of the device, see here.

Along with the heart rate monitor, which Samsung said is the first of its kind, the new device also features an enhanced version of the S Health app that also works with with the recently-announced Samsung wearable devices – the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo- and the newly-unveiled Gear Fit smart band.

In the meantime South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said it will decide whether the Galaxy S5 should be classified as a piece of medical equipment.

However a ministry official told the Yonhap news agency that its appraisal is unlikely to upset Samsung’s rollout schedule. “Even if it is designated as a medical device, the procedure for testing its safety and functions is not complicated,” he said.
