Medical devices could be the next wave of iPhone-connected gadgets sold in the Apple Store, according to Technology Review. Apple has previously touted the possibility of turning the iPhone into a medical instrument but the market has been slow to grow. “One reason is that most such medical devices need approval from the US Food and Drug Administration,” says the report. However, a wave of devices that are closely integrated with the iPhone are expected to gain approval and launch in the Apple store soon. They include US vendor Agamatrix’s glucose meter that fits into the iPhone port.

Plus a report in Mobile Health News says that earlier this month Apple quietly launched a new section in its App Store that appears to be targeted at healthcare professionals, another sign that health-directed devices and apps are growing in popularity for Apple. “This small and focused collection of apps helps customers discover and choose the best healthcare apps for iPhone and iPad,” says Afshad Mistri, Apple’s medical market manager for worldwide business markets in an email leaked to the publication.
