Docomo aims to generate approximately ¥10 billion (US$130 million) in revenues in the next five years from mobile health services, a forward projection the operator revealed in its first quarter results for the 2012 financial year.

Health is one of the sectors targeted by the operator for future growth and earlier this month Docomo announced a new venture with Omron Healthcare, a leading medical device vendor, which will pull together their existing health activities into a unit with over one million subscribers at launch, another figure mentioned in the operator’s results.

The new unit, which is called Docomo Healthcare and is majority controlled by the operator, will launch additional mobile health services during the current financial year, the operator said.

It will pull together three existing health businesses: Docom’s iBodymo remote monitoring service and the existing Docomo Healthcare, as well as Omron’s Wellness Link. The latter two companies are described as health management services.

Separately Docomo has announced an August 1 launch date for its Android-based Raku-Raku smartphone which it has billed as being “the first smartphone designed for users who are new to touchscreen operation.”  The operator is targeting the handset at older users who represent a significant growth market for smartphones in Japan. The new Raku-Raku device is a smartphone version of a popular existing handset range.
