Norway’s Telenor announced it now has more than 200 million subscribers in its 13 operating markets across Asia and Europe.

“Telenor is in the hands of more than 200 million people from Malaysia to Norway,” announced president and CEO Sigve Brekke (pictured). “Telenor’s early explorers of the 1990s aspired to bring the benefits of mobile communications to everyone, but they could hardly have imagined the impact we witness now.”

After establishing an operation in Hungary 21 years ago, the company went on to establish its first Asian business in 1996. It now has six operations in the region, which it said generate more than 50 per cent of the group’s revenues, while Norway and the rest of Europe contribute 20 per cent each. Over the past decade, it has added more than 170 million subscribers.

In Asia, the company is present in Thailand, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia.

Going forward, Telenor said it is exploring new ways to sustain growth, capture customers’ attention and create value.

Meanwhile, the company has proposed the appointment of Gunn Waersted (pictured) as chairwoman to the company’s board of directors, with the matter set to be considered later today (17 December).

The position has been vacant since October following the resignation of former chairman Svein Aaser, who left in light of the ongoing investigation into Telenor affiliate Vimpelcom’s dealings in Uzbekistan.

Waersted is currently EVP and member of group executive management at Nordea Bank, as well as country senior executive at Nordea Bank Norway.

During her career, she has held a number of senior positions within banking and insurance, including CEO roles.
