PRESS RELEASE: Recently, China Telecom (Fujian), together with Huawei and other partners, deployed video security and piloted meter data collection applications based on 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) in batches for the first time. This was on the 5G customized network campus of Wanhua Chemical (Fujian).

The 5G network was upgraded to support RedCap, and RedCap modules were embedded in terminals, thereby forming native RedCap capabilities. 5G RedCap is also known as a lightweight 5G. It reduces the power consumption and costs of 5G terminals by reducing their spectrum bandwidth, the number of transmit and receive antennas, and the number of modulation orders. This makes RedCap an important vessel for 5G to implement massive IoT. The campus has adopted hundreds of 5G RedCap video security devices, which can be deployed much more easily than traditional ones, significantly reducing the workforce, time, and investment needed. With the support of AI, the prediction efficiency of manufacturing security has been improved by 70%, with 78% fewer violations and 80% lower management costs. The combination of 5G RedCap and Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (Hart) meters enables flexible data collection, pioneering the application of 5G RedCap in chemical manufacturing.

Wanhua Chemical is a global supplier of new chemical materials and the world’s largest MDI manufacturer. Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) has always been at the forefront of the industry in applying next-generation information technologies such as 5G. China Telecom is a world-leading information service carrier that is integrated and intelligent. China Telecom has made it clear that from now until 2035, it will take three steps to become a national force leading in science and technology. By the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, it is determined to win the recognition of the country, market, and its customers as a scientific and technological enterprise with unique characteristics. It will realize at least on a basic level cloud-network independence and promote cloud-network synergy. By aggregating chain partners inside and outside the industry, China Telecom aims to create a prosperous ecosystem and lead the integrated development of the industry. With the support of China Telecom (Fujian) and Huawei, Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) has built a customized 5G network covering an area of 3.5 km2. Recently, it has also solved many issues, including the large-scale deployment of 5G RedCap native terminals, AI service convergence, and E2E application testing. Hundreds of 5G RedCap terminals have been brought online as a result.

After the first large-scale commercial use of RedCap, China Telecom (Fujian), Huawei, and Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) started to plan more advanced lightweight 5G applications. For example, upwards of 3000 5G RedCap cameras and 5000 DCS data collectors are to be deployed in the eastern area of Wanhua Chemical (Fujian), and 5G RedCap will be integrated with AI and big data analysis to continuously improve digital and intelligent capabilities of enterprises. In addition, based on specific scenarios, a network baseline solution is set to be developed based on RedCap to incubate standard products on the 5G customized network, enabling more enterprises to install 5G in a lightweight manner, and promoting the development of the industry.
