PRESS RELEASE: Spectacular closing ceremony bids an emotional farewell to Hangzhou, spotlighting the achievements of thousands of athletes. Beyond exciting sporting events, the 19th Asian Games also witnesses state-of-the-art communication technologies, like 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technologies. By applying numerous 5G-A innovation, it provides network assurance for the Asian Games, also promotes urban development.

From a historical perspective, hosting large-scale sporting events such as the Asian Games and the Olympics is a huge challenge. For the Asian Games, one of the most crucial challenges is how to hold the Games using cost-effective and powerful technologies that are also boost the economy wider afterwards.

China Telecom and ZTE’s 5G-A technologies involves unique applications in three aspects, including immersive experience, cost-effective management, and economy boosting.

5G-A facilitating smooth and immersive game watching

This solution leverages 5G-A base stations with the industry largest bandwidth and RIS (Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface, a type of signal reflection and transmission board) for ubiquitous signal coverage to support multiple 8K video live broadcasts simultaneously. The peak downlink rate reaches an impressive 25Gbps, enabling up to 100,000 users to surf the internet simultaneously. After RIS deployed, UE downlink rate is increased by 6 times and uplink rate by 20 times.

Besides, with worldwide first naked-eye 3D and wireless AR glasses from ZTE,audience can watch 4K/8K 3D videos without wearing glasses, which ensuring real-time experience for tens of thousands of viewers and live broadcasters. Beyond the Asian Games, it will be deployed on concerts to improve the audience immersive experience.

5G-A empowering cost-effective and high-efficiency management

For organizers, digital solutions have significantly improved management efficiency and reduced labor costs. The digital twin based visual management has established a comprehensive control system for the Asian Games, coupled with 5G RedCap cameras (Low-cost simple-function 5G terminal), saving cables and labor costs. It enables full area device operation detection, crowd evacuation, and emergency handling. These applications are now deployed in multiple factories to reduce labor costs and cable costs.

Additionally, Large number of sports devices have been delivered everyday by unmanned vehicle based on ISAC(Integrated Sensing and Communication). In the future, it will be applied to intelligent scenarios such as low altitude unmanned logistics and low altitude unmanned take-out delivery, enabling these scenarios with lower cost and higher accuracy.

5G-A boosting the economy wider

The project has stimulated the development of Hangzhou’s tourism and new media industry, bringing substantial economic growth. For tourism, this project has achieved stable network coverage and throughout the ships in Qiantang river by deploying 5G pico base stations. Serving millions of tourists, the 5G-A ships have emerged as a new Hangzhou attraction, increasing user experience by more than 10 times.

For live broadcasting industry, the mobile 5G-A base stations supports 100 channels of 4K live streaming, enabling low-latency chroma keying live broadcasting. This solution can be used in remote interviews and Internet celebrity live streaming, making remote synchronized interviews possible.

During the Asian Games, the unveiling of 5G-A technologies show the possibility and potential of future communication technology development. Compared to traditional network, 5G-A not only reduces human resources and cable usage in both venues and factories, but also leads to cost savings in urban management. Moving forward, China Telecom and ZTE remain committed to industry cooperation, promote 5G-A technologies innovation, lead the digital transformation of various industries and utilize Hangzhou as a benchmark to share its experiences in digital development with other cities.
