PRESS RELEASE: China Mobile Shijiazhuang and Huawei jointly tested and verified an innovative 5G radio and antenna solution that dynamically adapts radio power to moving trains on the high-speed railway in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. The field test showed that this solution effectively mitigated interference with the nearby residential networks and moreover eliminated the unwanted overshoot coverage. This innovative solution improves the coverage between sites by more than 3 dB, traffic by around 35%, and average data rate by around 40%. With this solution, high-speed railway passengers can enjoy a premium 5G experience.

This innovative solution has been mainly deployed at sites around the Shijiazhuang Railway Station. The Shijiazhuang Railway Station is a very important transport hub that serves three main railway lines in North China and is a major transport hub connecting the capital city Beijing. Hosting 240 trains every day, the railway station needs powerful mobile network infrastructure to meet the user needs.

The current high-speed railway dedicated mobile network employs a two-sector two antenna configuration which may result in issues like inaccurate power projection, blind spots under base station towers, poor cell edge performance etc. In addition, the high-speed railway network can easily interfere with the public network, especially in the dense residential areas. With the increasing service requirements and traffic volume of public network users, the interference between the public network and dedicated network rises correspondingly. It is very challenging to ensure great user experience in high-speed railway dedicated mobile network.

To deal with the challenges, China Mobile Shijiazhuang and Huawei jointly launched the high-speed railway power adaption solution, bringing ultimate experience to high-speed railway users. The solution uses a unique inter-sector power sharing scheme and an antenna roll technology integrated in the Huawei Integrated Pisa Antenna, to improve network performance along railway tracks. The inter-sector power sharing technology enables dynamic power allocation from the radio units to the sector projecting coverage towards the location of the moving train. The Integrated Pisa Antenna uses an innovative horizontal roll technology to enable the radio energy to be accurately focused on the high-speed railway line. This solves the problem of weak signals under base station towers and reduces the interference to 5G users in surrounding areas. The field tests proved the effectiveness of the two innovations, where the unwanted overshoot coverage issue has been largely reduced in the surrounding residential areas, and the 5G signal quality of the neighboring cells has been greatly improved.

The success of the solution sets a benchmark for improving the 5G experience of high-speed railway passengers in China. Together with Huawei, China Mobile Shijiazhuang will continue their dedication for the premium network infrastructure construction to support better socioeconomic development and public services.
