A quarter of enterprises are spending spending more than $100,000 on average developing individual mobile apps, according to research from backend-as-a-service vendor AnyPresence.

Richard Mendis, AnyPresence CMO and Co-Founder said the high cost “reflects the inherent complexity of enterprise apps”.

“Whether the app is targeted at employees, partners, or customers, enterprise mobile applications can have sophisticated integration, security, and performance needs that often make them more complex to develop, test, and maintain than the typical consumer app,” he added.

More than half of respondents said that it takes at least three months to develop mobile app.

However, Mendis noted, the research shows that an increasing number of enterprises are adopting multiple development approaches to reduce costs.

More than half of respondents said they use mobile application development platforms with just under half using mobile web frameworks. Around a third said they use mobile backend/middleware platforms and mobile UI frameworks.

In the next year, more companies expect to use a combination of custom development and platform solutions to avoid the limitations of third-party development environments.
