Nintendo’s Mario smartphone game to launch next month

16 NOV 2016

Nintendo’s latest smartphone game, Super Mario Run, is set to launch 15 December for iOS users in 151 countries and will support 10 languages, including English, Japanese and Chinese.

The game is free to download and players can try “elements” of the game’s three modes at no cost. However, to play the full version, they will have to dish out $9.99.

“Developed under the direction of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Run brings a new take on the series’ beloved action-platforming gameplay to iPhone and iPad for the first time.” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s senior VP of sales and marketing.

Super Mario Run is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices running iOS 8.0 or later and is the first game from the popular Super Mario Bros franchise developed specifically for mobile devices.

An Android version is reportedly in the works.

In the game, Mario runs forward on his own, but relies on a user’s tap to jump over obstacles and collect coins.

Back in April, Nintendo said that it would launch apps for two of its games, Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing, by autumn but these were reportedly delayed to next year to focus on Super Mario Run.

Last year Nintendo revealed plans to launch five titles by the end of March 2017. One of these was social networking app Miitomo, which got 10 million downloads in its first month.
