Analytics firm Flurry added support for HTML5-based web apps to its analytics service, which provides information to help developers improve their apps and how they are distributed.

The free service is used by more than 60,000 companies for more than 150,000 apps and already supports products built for Android, BlackBerry, iOS, J2ME and Windows Phone 7. The HTML5 version is currently in beta.

"While overall demand for HTML5 remains nascent, there is strong interest among traditional media companies, a group to which Flurry is highly committed," said Flurry president and CEO Simon Khalaf.

According to a Flurry developer poll, HTML5 is favoured by web-based companies adapting their services for smartphones and tablets. Native apps remain the preferred choice for developers building apps focused on mobile devices. Recent research by Evans Data found that around three quarters of developers are using or plan to use HTML5 for projects.
