A US firm that enables retail point-of-sales systems to successfully read a barcode that has been downloaded onto a mobile phone screen has raised US$4.9 million in series A backing from yet2Ventures, Samsung Ventures and Mitsui along with independent investors. Mobeam’s technology enables mobile phones to interact with the laser scanners used at retail outlets. The firm will use the proceeds from fundraising to push its technology as a potential industry standard. Retail scanners struggle to read barcodes on mobile phones because of the way that screens on handsets are constructed, says the company.
