Kenya’s largest mobile operator, Safaricom, has launched its 3G HSPA network commercially. Subscribers will have access to high-speed mobile data services at speeds of up to 7.2 Mb/s.

Safaricom sees 6.7% rise in net profit

Kenya’s leading mobile operator by subscribers Safaricom has reported net profit of KES6.63 billion (US$84.15 million) for the six months ended 30 September 2009, up 6.7 percent from KES6.21 billion in the same period a year earlier, notes TeleGeography.

Kenya’s Safaricom IPO oversubscribed by 532%

Safaricom’s IPO was oversubscribed by 532 percent, according to the Kenyan government. Foreign investors will receive only 15 percent of the 10 billion shares sold, despite being earlier promised 35 percent.

Safaricom launches HSDPA in Kenya

Kenya’s largest mobile operator, Safaricom, has launched a HSDPA upgrade on its network in the coastal city of Mombassa, offering speeds up to 7.2Mb/s. The company said that it has invested Sh1.8 billion (US$27.5 million) on the network upgrade.

 

Safaricom buys into One Communications

Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom has acquired a 51 percent stake in One Communications, a local company that provides various data communications services, including fixed WiMAX.

 

Safaricom subs base jumps 50%

Cellular News reports that Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom has seen its subscriber base rise over the six months to October by 50.3 percent, from 7.956 million to 11.956 million, while turnover increased by 20 percent over the year-earlier period to KES34.5 billion (US$469 million).

Safaricom looks to raise US154M

TeleGeography reports that Kenya’s leading mobile operator by subscriptions, Safaricom, has announced its intention to raise KES12 billion (US$154 million) in phases over the coming year to fund its continual network expansion drive.

Safaricom FY profits drop 23%

Cellular News notes that Kenya’s Safaricom has seen a 23 percent fall in its full year profits to KES10.54 billion (US$136 million), from KES13.85 billion in the last fiscal year.

Safaricom buys WiMAX operator

Cellular News notes that Kenya’s Safaricom has signed an agreement to buy local WiMAX operator Packet Stream Data Networks for an undisclosed amount.
