PayPal to run a mobile trial with major retailer by end-2011
PayPal will have a mobile payment trial up-and-running with a major US retailer before the year-end, according to parent eBay’s chief executive John Donahoespeaking during an analyst call for the e-commerce site’s Q2 2011 results.
eBay strengthens m-payments with Zong buy
eBay has made a major push into mobile payments, acquiring Silicon Valley-based Zong, a specialist in carrier billing. The online auction giant will pay approximately US$240 million in cash for the firm and expects the deal to close in the third quarter. Zong boasts connections with more than 250 mobile operators worldwide, offering “localised, secure and easy-to-use payments capabilities for digital goods and services” in 21 languages and 45 countries.
eBay strengthens mobile apps play with Critical Path buy
Online auction site eBay acquired Critical Path Software, stating that its “proven mobile development capabilities will play an integral role in enabling eBay to accelerate improvements to the mobile experience for customers globally.” The companies have worked together for more than two years, to develop apps including ebay for iPhone, StubHub, eBay Classifieds, and Shopping.com.
