The GSMA’s new head of NFC has told Mobile World Live that commercial success of the technology is dependent upon operators working with a variety of different players in the market.

“If we try and do it alone it’s not going to work,” comments Pierre Combelles in a new video interview.

The former Orange executive is just three weeks into his role at the GSMA but claims the NFC industry is finally at a “tipping point” where real success can now be achieved. “Of course, there’s still a lot to do because let’s not forget we’re really moving the tectonics of very, very big actors; banks, retailers, operators and so on and, of course, the habits of people as well. This is not going to change overnight but I think momentum is gaining.”

Elsewhere in the interview Combelles talks up the role of the operator in NFC deployments – in particular, the element of security – and claims there is room for all players in the value chain. “We don’t know any other ecosystem in which the responsibilities between the different actors and what the customer can expect in terms of service and guarantee is as clearly specified as SIM-based NFC,” he says.
