Tencent adds services to messaging app in China

05 AUG 2013

In an attempt to make money from its free mobile messaging app, Chinese media company Tencent has added more services to the iOS version of Weixin (known as WeChat outside China).

New services include mobile payments, a game centre and sticker store.

The updates to Weixin are believed to be similar to those Tencent has already made available for WeChat users.

The first game release is Tian Tian Ai Xiao Chu, although the launch of a games centre suggests more titles are to follow.

A sticker store aggregates all stickers into a centralised place for users to browse through, plus paving the way for purchases of more “premium” stickers.

No Weixin update is available for Android users on Google Play, although one is expected soon.
