Rick Osterloh (pictured), a Motorola insider and Android specialist, has been promoted to president and COO of Motorola Mobility, as the Google business unit prepares to be acquired by China’s Lenovo.

Osterloh reports to the Motorola operating board at Google until the Lenovo deal is complete.

Jonathan Rosenberg, who announced the appointment on Motorola’s official blog, steps aside from the COO role after only a few weeks from his appointment.

Rosenberg, who has a long track record at Google, was named as Motorola Mobility COO in February. His appointment came after news that Motorola Mobility CEO Dennis Woodside would be stepping down to become COO of cloud storage company Dropbox.

Rosenberg, until the Lenovo handover is done and dusted, continues in his role as Google liaison and advisor to Motorola.

Osterloh, responsible for the Android platform at Motorola, joined the company seven years ago. His time at Motorola was interrupted, however, by a two-year spell at Skype.

“We’re confident in his [Osterloh’s] ability to not only manage a smooth transition at Motorola from Google to Lenovo but, also to lead the business forward for continued growth,” said Liu Jun, EVP at Lenovo’s mobile business group, quoted by Reuters.
