PRESS RELEASE: Recently, China Unicom Guangdong hosted a delegation of analysts from 13 international organizations, including IDC and GSMA, at the China Unicom 5G Innovation Lab in Guangzhou, China. During this meeting, Hao Liqian, General Manager of China Unicom Guangdong, introduced their innovative practices following China Unicom Group’s strategy to unite the development of computing and communications networks. Chen Mengchang, deputy general manager of China Unicom Guangdong, and Wang Jingyu, director of the Science and Technology Innovation Department of China Unicom Group, attended the meeting.

Hao said that China Unicom Guangdong’s vision of the convergence development of computing and communication networks is to enable the use of computing services as conveniently as using the water and electricity supplies. China Unicom Guangdong will provide the most comprehensive solutions so that computing networks will act as a solid foundation for the intelligent society, realizing the efficient convergence of digital economy factors such as data, computing power, algorithms, models, services, and applications.

Up to now, China Unicom Guangdong has built a set of advanced computing networks including supercomputing, intelligent computing, and general computing. The HaoSuan (www.haosuan.com) platform of China Unicom Guangdong can provide one-stop subscription services with multi-region, multi-mode, and multi-precision capabilities for applications such as computing, transportation, storage, and algorithms.

Hao believes that data governance is key to accelerating the development of 5.5G intelligent applications and converging computing and communications networks. China Unicom Guangdong has established an integrated system of “Data Processing Factory” covering data infrastructure, data governance, data circulation, data application, and data security. In the past three years, the service revenue of China Unicom Guangdong in the fields of digital government, smart healthcare, Internet of Things (IoT), and digital finance has achieved a compound growth rate of 75%.

In the future, China Unicom Guangdong will achieve long-term construction of data infrastructure and provide fundamental services for data circulation transactions through technology innovations in blockchain, privacy computing, and trusted data space. Furthermore, China Unicom Guangdong will accumulate high-value industry data sets in innovative practices such as data governance, data circulation, and data application, providing high-quality data basis for AI model training and evaluation.

In terms of communications networks, China Unicom Guangdong has built the largest provincial 5G network in China with more than 176,000 base stations. Meanwhile, China Unicom Guangdong is extending its communications networks from traditional land-based use to new application fields of low-altitude and marine environments to achieve all-scenario 5.5G coverage. Its low-altitude private networks have covered more than 9,100 square kilometers of airspace and serve more than 300 UAV hangars. With the integrated technology innovation of communications, sensing, and computing, China Unicom Guangdong is providing solutions for multiple application scenarios such as environmental monitoring, intelligent logistics, and emergency services. To better serve the marine economy with 5G, China Unicom Guangdong has built the first provincial 5G marine private network in China, serving 40 marine ranches, 23 offshore wind farms, and tens of thousands of digital fishing boats. China Unicom Guangdong is also vigorously promoting the construction of next-generation 5G IoT networks. It has built the world’s largest RedCap network with 127,000 sites, enabling typical applications such as Internet of Industry, Internet of Vehicles (IoV), and Internet of Videos. It has also built more than 300 5G private networks and served more than 1,200 key industry accounts, accelerating the 5G applications in the core production processes for digital transformation.

So far, China Unicom Guangdong has implemented 5G “U-Joy Cities” projects in Guangdong and the Greater Bay Area, fully unleashing the value of 5G for smart life and smart industries. In 2023, China Unicom Guangdong and Huawei’s 5G Digital Fishing project won GSMA’s “5G Productivity Challenge” Award. And in 2024, China Unicom Guangdong and Huawei won the GSMA GLOMO “Best Mobile Operator Service for Connected Consumers” Award.

2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of China Unicom Group. China Unicom Guangdong will create a new intelligent era with partners through the 5G “U-Joy Cites” innovation projects.
