Owners of Android devices spend an average of 42 minutes per day with “add on applications” such as Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Skype, more than 60 percent more than BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, or Symbian users, according to a study published by analytics company Zokem. This includes apps embedded into handsets by vendors when they ship in order to complement core features such as voice, SMS and personal information management, as well as apps downloaded from stores.

Microsoft launches two phase apps store rollout

Microsoft has confirmed that it will launch its new ‘Windows Marketplace for Mobile’ applications store next Tuesday (6 October), initially available only on smartphones running Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5.

Windows Mobile smartphone sales fall 20%

Sales of smartphones running Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system (OS) declined by 20 percent in the third quarter according to Gartner, despite a 13 percent increase in the total number of smartphone sales. Only 3.2 million smartphone units running the OS were sold in the third quarter, Gartner said, down from the 4.05 million units sold in the third quarter of 2008.
