MVNO market expands in Italy

Italy’s Wind Telecommunicazioni SpA has signed an agreement with France’s Auchan under which the retail chain will become a MVNO.

Italian operator Wind is close to selling a 10 percent stake in the company to three private equity groups for about €1 biliion, writes the Financial Times. Wind’s holding company Weather will sell a 5 percent stake to Apax Partners, while TA Associates and Madison Dearborn together will buy a further 5 percent stake.

 

Report: Sawiris bids 4B for 3 Italia

An Italian newspaper claims this morning that Weather Investments, the telecoms investment vehicle led by Egyptian entrepreneur Naguib Sawiris, has made a bid worth around €4 billion for 3 Italia, the Hutchison Whampoa-owned Italian mobile operator.

Wind ups revenue

TelecomPaper reports that Italian telecoms operator Wind reported revenues of €2.69 billion for the first half of this year, 5.4 percent more than in the first half of 2007.

Wind embeds DVD disc in SIM card holder

According to Cellular News, Italian operator Wind has started offering SIM cards with an embedded DVD compliant optical disc in the plastic holder which can be used to store PC software or media content.

Wind/3 Italia towers sale falls through

The planned US$2.2 billion sale of Italian mobile operators Wind and 3 Italia’s jointly-owned mobile tower business – known as Eiffel – has fallen through, reports Telegeography. Digital Multimedia Technologies, the intended buyer, said in a statement the sale was “definitely over.”

Major players win new 3G frequencies in Italy

Italian telecoms regulator, the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico (MdSE), has awarded the 3G spectrum vacated by Italian mobile operator Ipse 2000 to existing operators Vodafone Italia, Telecom Italia (TIM) and Wind following a short auction.
