PCCWs UK Broadband planning 2012 LTE launch

UK Broadband, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based telecoms group PCCW, is preparing to launch an LTE network in the UK using spectrum it already holds, with the intention of offering services as early as next year.

O2 questions legality of UK 4G plans

O2 UK asserted that some of the conditions of the proposed UK 4G spectrum auction are “a state aid and therefore illegal under EU law,” which would enable bidders other than Vodafone UK and O2 to potentially acquire spectrum at discounted prices.

Ofcom: mobile broadband use on the up, but performance mixed

UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom published its first research into the performance of mobile broadband in the country, noting that “mobile broadband performance is likely to remain significantly below fixed broadband performance until the rollout of additional spectrum for mobile services in the UK, which is expected to begin in 2013.”

Ofcom details UK ‘4G’ benefits

UK telecoms watchdog Ofcom said that “4G” mobile networks will deliver “more than 200 percent of the capacity of existing 3G technologies using the same amount of spectrum,” following research it conducted to ascertain the likely efficiency benefits.
